The Russian Orthodox Church’s system of post-graduate professional theological education includes a PhD program for training academic-educational and theological personnel in chief subjects in accordance with the nomenclature of specialities listed by the ROC Dissertation Board.

Requirements made to a PhD thesis correspond to the parameters of the academic evaluation system adopted in the Russian Federation, Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova as well as to international academic certification standards.

A PhD thesis should be an academic qualifying work in which the author, on the basis of his or her research, develops theoretical provisions which, taken in their totality, can be qualified as a new significant academic theological achievement, or the author offers a solution to a major academic problem of importance for the modern development of theology, bibleistics, church practices, church history, church arts, church administration, canon law and other branches of scholarship related to theology and inter-disciplinary knowledge.

A PhD thesis should meet the requirements described in the Dublin Descriptors and the Qualification Frameworks of the European Higher Education Area for the third cycle of education, as well as the European Qualification Framework for Lifelong Learning for the eighth level of education.

A seeker of the PhD degree is enrolled in the ROC Institute of Post-Graduate Studies in accordance with the Entrance Rules. The enrolment to the PhD program is made together with a partner university abroad. After the enrolment, each doctoral candidate is assigned to one of the ROC Institute’s Chairs. The normative duration of the training under the PhD program is four years at most.

In the process of drafting a thesis, a doctoral candidate is offered an opportunity to attend exclusive lectures by leading Russian and visiting scholars on topical areas of today’s research, invited for cooperation by the Institute. Academic advice is given by leading ecclesial, secular and visiting scholars. Doctoral candidates have an opportunity to undergo a linguistic practice in Russian and foreign universities, partners of the ROC Institute of Post-Graduate Studies.
